The NASA Memory Foam Mattress
Back in 1966, NASA was looking for a special material that will help astronauts to reduce the g-force impact during the lift off and landing. Eventually they created a special visco-elastic foam material that will automatically conform to a person’s body shape, and then go back to normal when the pressure is gone!
That’s why today people still refer to the mattresses created with the material “visco memory foam mattress”.
In 1989, Fagerdala, a Swedish manufacturer, acquired Tempur-Pedic® technology from NASA. In 1992, its memory foam mattress became a global success.
Seeing the success, other foam manufactures started to make their own memory foam mattresses, mattress toppers, foam pillows and other consumer products. You can easily find products regardless the bed sizes you have (king, queen and twin size for example) or the price tag you may expect, especially in the cheap and discount memory foam mattress category.
Important Criteria to Find Your Best Memory Foam Mattress
1. Foam Density
This is the weight in pounds per square foot. Contrary to the common believe, foam density has a lot more to do with its duration other than the feel! A 5 pound per cubic foot memory foam mattress outlasts a 3 pound one by 10 years in average!
Most high-end mattresses have 5-7 density.
Beware of Cheaters!
Many mattress manufacturers tell you that they offer 5 density mattress. However, they don’t tell you that the density is only for the 1st layer (about 1 inch!) and the layers below are all 2-3 pound density memory foams!
A simple way to avoid this filthy trap is to buy only from the recognized manufacturers. It may seem a bit more expensive, but you will save BIG 10 or 20 years down the road. More importantly your mattress will give you the most comfort and you will feel totally refreshed every morning.
2. Foam mmHg
This is the measurement to determine your mattress’ reaction against pressure. 32mmHg or lower is considered pressure relieving, the lower the better. Top end memory foam mattress can have a low mmHg near 10.
3. Foam Indentation Load Deflection (ILD)
This decides how soft or hard your memory foam mattress is. A higher IDL means firmer and harder. You need also consider the thickness of the mattress – the thicker the harder with the same ILD.
The ILD ranges from 6 to 40, most quality memory foam mattresses on the market have an ILD between 10 and 16.
Multiple mmHgs and ILDs
Top quality mattresses usually have multiple foam layers. Each layer has its own mmHg and ILD to give you the best comfort and duration.
4. Foam Resilience
This is measured as the rebound percentage of a steel ball dropping from the height of 36″. The higher the value, the more durable the foam is under compression forces.
5. Warranty
Simple yet critical. A good quality mattress should give you 10-30 year warranty (preferably above 15 years). Any memory foam with warranty below 10 years is a clear indication of poor quality.
6. Customer Comments, Complains and Rating
In my opinion, this is the #1 criterion you should consider. I went through soooo many online stores, forums, discussion groups and consumer reports. And the information was just SHOCKING!
For example, one secret I discovered is that the most expensive memory foam mattress may NOT be the best. Their Foam Density, mmHg and ILD are all impressive. However, the overall user rating isn’t that good.
One special mattress, for example, seems to overdo their job – their density is so high and they have so many layers that the mattress becomes really HOT in the summer!
